In this article, the author studies the existing testimonies regarding the whereabouts of King Michael, Queen Helen and their devoted supporters from the communist coup on December 30 until they left Romania by train, reaching Switzerland. Together, for better or worse: King Michael’s companions in exile Abstract On January 3rd 1948, King Michael unwillingly left Romania, after His Majesty’s forced abdication, together with his mother, Queen-Mother Helen, and a number of loyal friends from the Palace staff: his aides-de-camp Constantin Petre-Lazăr and Jacques Vergotti, the marechal of the Royal Court Dimitrie Negel, his secretary Mircea Ionniţiu with his fiancée and brother, his close friend Vania Negroponte with his wife and son, the Queen’s lady in waiting Nelly Catargi, the head of the palace security Eugen Bianu, and Palace servants Konrad and Anna Schöpp, husband and wife.
